for a couple of years so I was keen to see what new features are in the
latest version.

announced the immediate availability of Delphi 8 for the Microsoft .NET
Framework. This latest edition outlines a clear path for the future of
Delphi, enabling developers to use their existing Delphi language and

migrate existing Win32 Delphi applications to the .NET Framework.

Borland announced 120
layoffs Thursday, the third series of cuts at the company since
September. The changes will streamline operations consistent with
targeted operating margins, said the company in a filing with the SEC.
Borland has announced
support for electronic signatures within CaliberRM and StarTeam, key
components of their Application Lifecycle Management strategy for
software development. In light of increased industry regulation,
electronic signatures are especially important for organizations such
as those governed by the United States Food and Drug Administration.
iAnywhere Solutions
today announced a new Borland dbExpress driver for SQL Anywhere Studio,
designed to simplify the development of database-powered applications
using the Borland Delphi and C++BuilderX integrated IDEs. The dbExpress
driver is included in Borland Delphi 8 for the Microsoft .NET Framework
and will be available by download for registered Delphi and C++BuilderX
developers.
palmOne announced Monday it
has extended Java support to its Treo 600 Smartphone line, as well as
its Tungsten handhelds. Also a beta of IBM's WebSphere Micro
Environment Toolkit for Palm OS developers (a standalone toolkit for
use with any J2ME-compatible development environment, such as Borland
JBuilder or SunONE Studio) was released.
Collaboration
technologies are not new. However, the term "collaboration" is so
loosely used and covers such a broad spectrum of technologies that it
is difficult to describe it in an exact manner. This article looks at
trends driving collaboration and the problem of too much unmanaged
collaboration.
Following on from
JBuilder X - unveiled at the end of autumn - comes Borland's Enterprise
Studio 7 for Java. This brings all Borland's application lifecycle
management tools together under one umbrella, including design,
deployment and requirement analysis tools.
According to German
press reports, because of the economic downturn in Europe, many
companies including Borland, HP, Oki and Toshiba will not be on the
show floor next year, even though CeBIT still ranks as the world’s
number one event for the ICT sector.

Corporate managers
bought into J2EE in a big way. Now, faced with the task of building
complex enterprise applications, they worry if they can find enough
skilled Java programmers. For their part, Java tool vendors are trying
to bring out tools that make J2EE much easier to use.
Borland stayed true
to its message of promoting software as a Corporate level strategic
resource to solve business problems, rather than as the exclusive
domain of isolated programmers solving technical problems, at its
conference in November.
At its user
conference, Borland unveiled the expected Enterprise Studio 7 for Java,
which consists of the JBuilder X IDE, as well as CaliberRM requirements
management, StarTeam collaboration software and Together modeling
tools. It also includes its Enterprise Server J2EE application server,
JDataStore Java database and Optimizeit Studio code analyzer and
performance monitor. Borland also unveiled updates to Delphi and Janeva.
