Borland CEO Dale Fuller said the Java community has already splintered
into different camps that support different versions of Java. He favors making Java open source to
unify the camps, improve the quality and speed evolution of the code.
Borland will join the JTC (Java Tools Community) a as a core member,
according to Pat Kerpan, Borland CTO. In participating, Borland is seeking interoperability in design
and deploy times for Java tools, Kerpan says.
In a series of news announcements today, Borland advanced its leadership
in Java, offering solutions and best practices for leveraging today's most comprehensive enterprise
computing software platform. Borland was also highlighted as a keynote speaker during the first day
of JavaOne.
Borland today announced support for Mac OS X in the next release of
Optimizeit Suite for Java. George Paolini, VP and General Manager of Developer Tools will discuss this
support during the "Java State of the Union Address" at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference.

Robert Coates Asks Borland's Board to Disclose Proxy Vote Totals

Robert Coates, a major shareholder and former director at Borland
announced today that he would ask the company's board to release the proxy vote for the company's
annual meeting.
The Delphi 7.1 Update has been updated to address the persistent field
issue in the original release. The latest version of the patch will enforce data integrity without
raising an exception.
Microsoft is making .NET a much broader team sport, for both developers and
software partners. This expanded vision has prompted the creation of a "Methodology Council" in which
the company works with a number of key VSIP partners to make suggestions and contributions to .NET
architectures as well as offering ideas for supporting and encoding best practices, patterns and even
models. Borland is a key member of this council.
A vulnerability has been reported in Firebird and Borland Interbase, which
can be exploited to cause a DoS and potentially compromise a vulnerable system. The
problem is due to a boundary error in the handling of database names and can
cause a buffer overflow by passing a long database name when connecting.
Segue and Borland will jointly market a bundled J2EE offering for optimizing
the performance of enterprise Java applications. The joint offering will incorporate Segue's
SilkPerformer load and performance testing tools and Borland's OptimizeIt ServerTrace J2EE root-cause
analysis tools.
Sun has launched Release 2 of its Java Desktop System and has, as promised,
bundled application development tools with the new version of JDS to foster developer interest in the
platform. In addition, Borland announced that it would support JDS with its JBuilder IDE.
