Installing / Un-installing Widget

To make installation easy, Widget has been deployed using a standard setup program. Just download and unzip the archive, run setup.exe and follow the on-screen prompts. Un-installing Widget is just as easy with the un-install option provided in the Control Panel. If you are upgrading from an older version, first un-install it and then install the new version to the same directory. This will keep any relevant settings from the previous version.

The archive also contains a detached PGP signature which can be used to confirm the integrity of setup.exe. Our public key can be downloaded from most keyservers or from our Contact Details page.

Troubleshooting Widget

Operating Systems
Widget has been designed and tested for use on Windows 2000, XP and 2003.
It will not work on any other OS.
What does Widget cost?
Widget is free. You may redistribute it provided you keep the zip archive intact. At some point we may release it as open source, let us know if you are interested. Some of the objects used by Widget have already been released under the MPL, see our software downloads page.
My Firewall reports Widget accesing the Internet
The Ping and Synchronise Clock features of Widget require access to the Internet. Also, the IP configuration feature can require access to your DHCP server (if you have one). Widget will only access the Internet to complete your requests, it does not access the Internet for any other reason.
Widget doesn't work for some users of my PC
Widget needs to modify its configuration file every time it is run. As a result you may need to give all users Modify and Write permission to the file widget.ini in the folder where you installed Widget.
What does the delete recent docs feature do?
The Start Menu in Windows displays a list of files (documents) which you have recently worked on. This menu is really a collection of shortcut files in a folder on your hard drive which grows as you work on more files. The delete recent docs feature cleans this folder to delete old or no longer valid shortcuts. The documents themselves are not effected.
I can't see the wallpaper menus
You need to enable this feature in the options. Go to the Configure screen, select the Desktop tab and ensure the box next to 'Enable Wallpaper Sub-menus' is checked. If you don't have a Desktop tab then you are using an older version which doesn't have these features, please download the latest version.
Some users can't change the wallpaper
All users must have read permissions for the specified Wallpaper folder.
Ping doesn't work when I'm logged in as a normal user
Widget uses raw sockets to ping IP addresses. Unfortunately Windows only allows members of the Administrators group to create raw sockets. We are working on a solution but until then you will need to run Widget as an Administrator. To avoid having to log in / out of your system use the 'Run As...' service. Windows XP Service Pack 2 blocks all access to raw sockets so until we find another method you won't be able to use Ping.
I'm logged in as an Administrator but Ping still doesn't work
Your firewall is probably blocking ICMP traffic, allow it and try again. If you are trying to use Widget on a LAN, the LAN may not allow ICMP traffic to access the Internet.
I set a new tray icon image but it is still the same
Changes to the tray icon image do not take effect until Widget is closed and run again.
If you are still having problems
